Tips & Tricks
Distilled from the community's best guide videos, checked against the pack data
Field-tested advice from the COBBLEVERSE community, distilled from three video guides: 20 Tips and Tricks by Ploop Craft, The ULTIMATE Beginner's Guide by ShoCkZxZ, and 100 Cobbleverse Tips And Tricks by Pocketcraft. Every item name, recipe, drop rate and evolution level below has been checked against the pack's own data (Cobblemon 1.7.3); claims that can't be verified from the data are credited to their source and may shift between pack versions.
Starting out
- Create your world with commands enabled — handy for progression repairs and optional region skips (see Progression & gyms). On an existing world: Esc → Open to LAN → Allow Cheats: ON → Start LAN World.
- At world creation, More → Game Rules hides a "starters will be shiny" rule for a guaranteed shiny starter, and the starter screen offers special sets beyond the classics: Pallet Town (Pichu, Pikachu, Eevee), the Lumina picks (Bagon, Azumarill, Budew) and cosplay Pikachu variants you won't easily get elsewhere (per Pocketcraft).
- The pack rebinds several keys:
C opens your party summary (not M as in plain Cobblemon), M opens the map, B your backpack, and P opens your PC from anywhere — you never need to build a physical one. - Shaders are on by default and can crash weaker machines — toggle them with
K. Also raise the pack's RAM allocation to at least 4096 MB in the Modrinth App instance options (per Pocketcraft). - Hostile mobs and hunger are off by default. To restore the vanilla experience, delete the Mobs Be Gone mod from the instance's mods folder and the no-hunger datapack from its datapacks (per Pocketcraft).
- You spawn wearing an iron backpack: it upgrades through copper/iron/gold/diamond/netherite sizes and takes upgrade modules — a magnet upgrade vacuums nearby drops, and stack upgrades raise the per-slot limit from 64 up to 1,024 (per ShoCkZxZ).
Catching & training
- Always carry a boat. A wild Pokémon nudged into a boat never despawns, so you can trap a shiny you're not equipped for, go fetch better balls or your catching team, and return at leisure.
- Build a dedicated catcher around False Swipe plus a sleep move: Breloom (never-missing Spore) and Gallade (Hypnosis — hold a Wide Lens for accuracy) are the community favourites, and False Swipe is available as a TM.
- Ball priorities for tough catches: open with a Quick Ball (5× on turn one), then whittle HP, apply a status, and from turn 10 throw Timer Balls (scales to 4× — double an Ultra Ball's 2×). A Dream Ball is 4× on sleeping targets, and the craftable Master Ball (Nether Star, netherite ingots, shulker shells) is best saved for legendaries.
- Eat a Golden Candied Razz Berry before any important catch — it doubles your catch chance and works on altar summons (per Ploop Craft).
- Don't waste the shiny-attracting Golden Candied Nanab Berry on altars: it only affects natural spawns. Ploop Craft tested 200 altar summons and dozens of Poké Snack catches and found no effect on either.
- Poké Snacks (cooking pot: honey bottle, Hearty Grains, Vivichoke, milk) lure targeted spawns when seasoned: EV berries attract Pokémon with that EV yield, Starf Berries and (enchanted) golden apples add shiny chance, an Enigma Berry adds a hidden-ability chance, and Lansat Berries boost HP IVs (per Pocketcraft).
- Craft several Exp. Shares (iron helmet, gold, lapis, amethyst, iron) — holders earn experience without battling, and per Ploop Craft the share isn't reduced by having multiple holders. Give your lead a Lucky Egg on top.
- Farm Lucky Eggs by parking a Chansey (10% drop) or Blissey (25%) in a pasture block — see the pasture-farm tips under Economy.
- The Golden Candied Pinap Berry boosts battle XP and also doubles what Exp. Candies give while active — but it does nothing for Rare Candies (per Ploop Craft).
- For Rare Candies, drink a Deluxe Coral Shake first to multiply the levels gained — but mind your level cap, since over-levelled Pokémon are locked out of trainer battles (per Ploop Craft).
- A Deluxe Violet Shake teaches a Pokémon all of its egg moves at once, skipping breeding and Mirror Herb setups entirely (per Ploop Craft).
- Grind levels in plains (high-level Bouffalant and Tauros) or snowy biomes (Weavile, Mamoswine, Piloswine) — big XP payouts that mostly yield Attack EVs too (per Pocketcraft).
- Right-clicking a Pokémon with EV-lowering berries (Pomeg, Kelpsy, Qualot, Hondew, Grepa, Tamato) lowers that EV but raises friendship — the fastest route to friendship evolutions.
Progression & gyms
- Regions unlock in order: Johto's leaders won't battle you until you've cleared all eight Kanto gyms and the Kanto League, and most legendaries are region-locked the same way. Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres are the notable exceptions — catchable from day one (see legendaries).
- Your level cap rises with each leader defeated and is shown on your Trainer Card. If your Pokémon suddenly stop gaining XP, you've hit the cap — beat the next gym.
- You start with a map to Brock. For every later gym, craft the leader's signature item (listed on their Trainer Card page — e.g. Misty's Cerulean Star is a Water Stone, seagrass and sand) and combine it with an empty map in a Kanto Cartography Table.
- Some structures live in other dimensions: Blaine is located from a Nether Cartography Table placed in the Nether, and the Kanto and Johto Leagues spawn in the End (End Cartography Table, using the Rival Sling and Master Cape). The Hoenn and Sinnoh Leagues are overworld finds via the Steel Hat and Draconic Fin.
- Search gym structures for hidden loot: Brock's gym hides a guaranteed Water Stone behind the coal blocks in a corner — exactly what the Cerulean Star needs — and Misty's gym has a loot room (with relic coins) hidden underneath.
- Lost a close gym fight? Kill the leader NPC — a replacement spawns that you can challenge immediately, skipping the rematch cooldown (per Ploop Craft).
- Beating a champion automatically enables the next region's datapack — close and reopen the world and its gyms, League and legendary structures generate from then on. If it doesn't kick in, see the unlock functions on World & Regions
- Trainer battles pay CobbleDollars — leaders pay 500+ and drop their badge and a TM — and even knocking out wild Pokémon earns a trickle of money.
- Craft a Trainer Spawner (diamond, redstone, stone bricks) to summon trainers on demand instead of roaming — it can even summon gym leaders if fed their signature item (per Pocketcraft).
Economy
- The pack's money loop: sell Relic Coins and emeralds via the bank button of a Cobble Merchant, then spend at merchants and the department store.
- Catch a chest-form Gimmighoul from a Gimmighoul tower: chest form (and Gholdengo) drops 24–48 Relic Coins at a time, versus a single coin from the roaming form (per ShoCkZxZ).
- Pastured Pokémon passively drop their loot in COBBLEVERSE, which enables infinite farms — all verified in pack data: Sableye (diamonds, emeralds, amethyst), Persian (gold nuggets), Rolycoly (guaranteed coal), Aggron (raw iron), the Charmander line (blaze powder), Groudon (Nether Stars) and Okidogi (Rare Candies, 2–3 at 25%). Enclose anything that can fly.
- Automate it with a Sophisticated Storage chest holding magnet, stack and compacting upgrades: drops get vacuumed in and auto-crafted into Relic Coin Pouches and Sacks, which sell for noticeably more than the same coins loose (per ShoCkZxZ).
- Pasture drops are deliberately slow: the instance config
pasture.loot.json sets a base drop chance of 0.05 per minute, which you can raise (Pocketcraft suggests 0.5–0.6 as a fair middle ground). - Craft a Store Card (Blue Apricorn, paper, iron ingot), map it in the Kanto Cartography Table, and visit the multi-floor department store: TMs, Poké Balls, Exp. Candies, evolution stones and items, battle items, berries, apricorns and more.
- The department store's wilderness trader sells mob drops — leather, string, feathers — which matters because vanilla mobs don't spawn by default (per ShoCkZxZ). Village Cobble Merchants (or one made from a Display Case) stock some too, at worse prices.
Exploration & world
- Loot every structure and hoard the "junk": type gems and evolution items are locate-crafting ingredients — a Water Gem goes into the Kyogre Radar, an Electirizer into the Turbine Key — and evolution stones feed many recipes.
- Locator Chips (purple-named; bastion treasure, end city chests, trial-chamber ominous vaults) craft into the Poké Radar, the base of every legendary radar — see the legendaries page for each radar and summoning item.
- A radar plus an empty map in the matching region's cartography table prints coordinates straight to that legendary's structure — e.g. the Lugia Radar (Psychic Gem, Water Stone, amethyst) points to Whirl Island.
- Already mapped a structure but want another copy? Add a Battle Seeker to the cartography process — it extends search range and targets structures you haven't mapped yet, great on shared servers (per Ploop Craft).
- In the End, a shiny Rayquaza waits in place of the Ender Dragon. Bring a False Swipe user and good balls before you jump in — it's high-levelled and you only get one shot at the freebie (per Pocketcraft).
- Hunt down Ash's house (a rare plains structure): battle Ash and his mom for rewards, and take the Ash Cap from the bedroom drawer. Give it to a Greninja, right-click to bond, raise friendship to the 255 max, then KO an opponent's Pokémon in battle to trigger Ash-Greninja.
- A Rage Candy Bar (cooking pot: milk, cocoa beans, sugar, wheat) worn as a cosmetic turns Pikachu into Ash Pikachu; holding a Pikanium-Z then enables 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt (per Pocketcraft).
- Build a Waystone network to shrink the pack's long travel distances: a Warp Stone (emerald, ender pearls, amethyst shards) plus stone bricks and obsidian per waystone — a Sableye farm covers the emeralds and amethyst.
- Grab every berry you see in villages and structures and start a farm: berries feed supplements, Poké Snack seasonings, apricorn juice and shakes, and missing varieties are grown by planting the right pair side by side (mutations).
Quality of life
- Craft a PokéNav to list exactly what can spawn where you're standing — spawns depend on light level and nearby blocks, so this stops you hunting in a spot where your target can't appear. Pair it with the spawn finder.
- Two addon suggestions from Ploop Craft: a spawn-notification mod (Cobblemon Spawn Notification or Spawn Alerts) so shinies ping you on screen, and Jade with the Cobblemon integrations addon to see typing and info for whatever you're looking at.
- Motion sick on ride Pokémon? Open
/cobblemon config, search "roll" and disable rolling — no cheats required (per Pocketcraft). - By default you can't punch Pokémon at all. If an aggressive wild Pokémon is chewing on you, enable player damage in the same Cobblemon config (per Pocketcraft).
- Convert vanilla chests in place with a Sophisticated Storage basic tier upgrade (right-click; contents are kept), then tier them up with copper/iron/gold/diamond/netherite upgrades for far more capacity plus upgrade slots (per ShoCkZxZ).
- Breeding pastures show the produced egg in a slot you can hopper out into a chest automatically; a party member with Flame Body, Magma Armor or Steam Engine then halves hatching time — the abilities don't stack (per Ploop Craft).
Advanced
- Early flying mounts (per Ploop Craft): Kilowattrel (Wattrel evolves at 25 and spawns around oceans and coasts) is about the fastest non-legendary flyer, with Noivern (Noibat spawns in dark caves) close behind; Staraptor (Staravia at 34) and a resurrected Aerodactyl round out the picks.
- Boost mounts with apricorn juice from the campfire pot: berry seasonings map flavor to ride stat (e.g. spicy raises acceleration, dry raises skill, sour protects stamina) — shift-hover any berry to read its flavor profile.
- Breed for IVs: pair Ditto with your target in a pasture (toggle the breeding button on!), give one parent a Destiny Knot to pass down IVs and the other a power item (e.g. Power Anklet for Speed) to guarantee that stat. The PC screen shows IVs, and Masuda (parents from two different original trainers) stacks with the crystal method (one shiny parent) for shiny odds (per Pocketcraft).
- No trade partner? Right-click any trade-evolution Pokémon with a Link Cable (copper, quartz, ender pearl — also common chest loot) to evolve it solo.
- Gimmighoul needs 999 Relic Coins to evolve — and feeding it netherite scrap on top produces progressively netherite-coated Gholdengo forms, up to a full netherite finish (per Pocketcraft).
- Give a Grotle a sapling to hold before it evolves at level 32: each sapling species grows a different Torterra tree variant, with shiny versions of each.
- Mega evolution is built in: dig up underground mega ruins for Keystone (crafts into a Mega Bracelet) and mega stones, then mega evolve from the battle UI or outside battle with
Y. - Brush ruins for Tumblestone and plant it on magma blocks to grow more — it crafts the ancient Poké Ball line, including the Ancient Jet Ball (2×, flies further).
- Against recoil-heavy targets like Spectrier and Glastrier, Skill Swap the ability Magic Guard onto them (the Reuniclus line, Clefairy and Sigilyph can) so they stop KOing themselves mid-catch (per Ploop Craft).
- Use Soak to make Ghost- and Grass-types vulnerable to False Swipe and Spore — Ploop Craft favours Samurott since it learns False Swipe too — and note that a slower catcher is often better: sleep wake-checks roll when the target acts, so acting last lets you throw before it can wake.
